I think you're coming at this accusation from a eurocentric point of view. To the rest of the world, guns are a staple of life.
To a western/european point of view, they're horrible and should be banned from existence and only left in the hands of police or military. Because the US is considered western/eurocentric, it's considered an outlier among its other western/european allies in that it has yet to ban guns to the extent that the other western/european countries have.
Outside of the western/european perspective however, the US is not an outlier in that regard.
